Special Education Course Sequence and Degree Requirements

The Master of Arts in Special Education is a 30-credit degree program.

Degree Requirements

  • Students must complete 30 credit-hours of course work within six (6) calendar years from the date of initial enrollment.
  • A cumulative GPA of 3.0 must be attained in all graduate work.
  • Degree candidates must successfully complete portfolio requirements under the supervision of the program director.  

Course Format & Delivery

Most courses are delivered online through Benedictine College’s course management system (typically Canvas). Online courses include a blend of synchronous and asynchronous work. If you have any questions, contact us for more information.

First Year

Fall

  • EDUC-5550 Theory of Characteristics of Individuals with Exceptionalities (3 credit hours)
  • EDUC-5551 Theory of Assessment of Individuals with Exceptionalities (3 credit hours)

Spring

  • EDUC-5553 Application of Functional Behavior, Positive Behavior Supports, and Classroom Management (3 credit hours)
  • EDUC-5554 K-6 SPED Practicum and Reflection (3 credit hours)

Second Year

Summer

  • EDUC-6680 Special Education Administration(3 credit hours)
  • EDUC-5555 Theory of Building School, Family, and Community Partnerships (3 credit hours)

Fall

  • EDUC-5556 Application of Methods and Strategies for Individuals with Exceptionalities (3 credit hours)
  • EDUC-5557 6-12 SPED Practicum and Reflection (3 credit hours)

Spring

  • EDUC-5558 Application of Transition Services for Individuals with Exceptionalities (3 credit hours)
  • EDUC-6581 Supervised SPED Teaching Capstone (3 credit hours)
  • EDUC-6699 Master’s SPED Comprehensive Exam

Portfolio Requirements:

Each student will create a portfolio to serve as evidence of each student’s mastery of our programs goals and learning objectives. Moreover, this portfolio provides each student with clear documentation of his or her understanding of the foundational principles and pedagogy.
